2017 VETTE WINNER HAS A LOT OF HEART
We will just get right to the heart of the matter – The Bellevue Hospital Foundation’s (TBHF) seventh annual “Is Your Heart Set on a Vette” Corvette Raffle found a winner with a lot of heart. Literally.
Bruce Farline, 64, of Spokane, WA was randomly picked from the 1,917 entries as the winner of TBHF’s annual event, during the drawing held on Feb. 25, 2017. The fact that Bruce had only one ticket in the raffle is not as unbelievable as the reality that he was lucky to be alive to learn he was the winner – because just 11 months earlier Bruce received a heart transplant that saved his life.
“I was in the hospital most of 2016,” recounted Bruce by phone from Washington. “I was on the heart transplant list for four years and my doctors told me I was about one week away from my own heart failing, when a young man named Parker was struck and killed by a car walking home from his job on a rainy night in Spokane. Within six hours of that horrible accident I was in the operating room getting ready to get this 19-year-old’s heart. Let me tell you, the experience changes you. How can anything in your life compare to something like that?”
Bruce received his new heart on March 13, 2016, but shortly thereafter, contracted a virus that put him in a coma for the next three months. Again, the prognosis was not great. Bruce recounts being able to hear his son talk with doctors who warned against getting his hopes up that his father would ever come out of the coma. But by July Bruce was regaining consciousness and slowly had to learn to walk, talk, and perform simple tasks all over again.
Daydreaming about classic cars helped Bruce make it through those long days and nights in the hospital. “Two items on my bucket list were, owning a classic Corvette, and eventually driving that car the length of historic Route 66,” continued Farline. “So one day I am thumbing through Hemmings Motor News and I come across the ad for the hospital’s raffle. I normally do not pay attention to or enter raffles, but I thought to myself, this is for a good cause and it is a hospital sponsoring the raffle, so I picked up the phone and called the number and ordered a ticket.
The rest is history.
“When I got the call (from TBHF Director Dennis Sabo) the Monday after the drawing I just could not believe it. With everything that had happened – the heart, coming out of the coma – and now this, my life was changing and my dreams were being fulfilled. It was a lot to take in. Totally unreal.”
Bruce had his choice of $100,000 in cash or a 2017 Corvette and $40,000 as the winner of the raffle. He chose the cash option and went out and checked an item off his bucket list by purchasing a 1966 Corvette Convertible.
Was he surprised that he won the raffle his first time entering and with just a single entry? “I always say, if you go fishing, you have to put your line in the water to have the chance to catch a fish. Same with this raffle. You have to buy a ticket to have a chance to win. All it takes is that one chance.”
Bruce is hoping to fulfill his dream to drive Route 66, but for now, he continues to heal and has also taken to rescuing a German Shepherd from the dog pound as a tribute to Parker, who worked in a pet store. “I had never considered rescuing an animal until I found out that Parker loved animals. It was the right thing to do.”
The 2018 Corvette Raffle will be held on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, at 5 p.m. A total of 2,018 tickets will be sold this year at $100 each. More information is available at www.vetteraffle.com, www.tbhfoundation.com, or www.bellevuehospital.com, or phone calling the Corvette Raffle hotline at 800.850.5528.
